The video on the screen showed a figure entering his room. Elias didn't turn around. He didn't want to see if the figure in the room matched the one on the screen. He simply watched the monitor as the figure reached out a hand toward his shoulder. The screen went black. The zip file vanished.

The folder didn't contain movies or home videos. It contained thousands of sub-folders, each labeled with a GPS coordinate and a timestamp. He opened one: 40.7128_N_74.0060_W_2026_04_28 .

He scrambled to delete the file, but the progress bar wouldn't move. A text document appeared on his desktop, titled README.txt .

The video file inside played instantly. It was a high-angle shot of a street corner in lower Manhattan. The quality was better than 8K; he could see the individual threads on a passing woman’s coat. He looked at the timestamp in the corner of the player.
