The film is loosely based on the true story of Specialist Richard Davis, an Iraq War veteran murdered shortly after returning home in 2003. Like the protagonist Hank Deerfield (played by Tommy Lee Jones), Davis's father was a former military police officer who launched his own investigation into his son's death.
