A cold chill washed over him. In the movie, a shadow was creeping toward the booth door. Vikram froze, his hand hovering over the kill switch. He heard a soft thud from the hallway behind him—the real hallway.

Vikram didn't turn around. He kept his eyes locked on the 480p image, watching as the shadow on the screen finally reached his digital self. The last thing he saw before the file crashed was a line of text scrolling across the bottom of the frame, right where the subtitles should have been: CRC Error: Reality Overwritten.
